Welcome to Year 3 2025. Below you will find general information for our year group, the Year 3 curriculum plans for each half term and the PowerPoint presentation from our July 2025 curriculum evening.
A polite reminder that we will be visiting the Think Tank Museum on Thursday 18th September 2025. Details and consent should be on Parent Pay soon! Please ensure your child has a packed lunch in a carrier bag and a drink in a disposable bottle. Any cold, trip day school provided lunch options must be ordered in advance. The children will need to be in school uniform and have a suitable coat, weather permitting.
Any new or exisiting medication that isn't currently in school must be returned/handed in to Mrs Jones. This is especially important because of our very fast approaching school trip.
The children will receive a times table diary whereby they can practice their times tables in a written format. They will also receive a TTRS (Times Tables Rock Stars) log in that they can use at both school and home. It is a fun online resource, where children can learn and be quizzed on the times tables. We ask that the children spend 10 minutes a day on times tables and we will be checking this weekly.
Please ensure your child's bookbag and diary are in school everyday, and that you have read with your child and signed their diary. Children are expected to quiz on their book online using AR at school everyday. We appreciate that chapter books take longer to read, so suggest that if they are slowly working through an AR chapter book, that they also take a shorter book that they can read and quiz on the next day.
Weekly spellings and a spellings homework sheet will be given out on a Friday. The children will have three spelling lessons a week, and although we will not be testing the children, we do still expect that they revise their spellings at home. The green spelling books will still be sent home with spellings stuck in. They are to be used to write their spellings out, the spellings will also be on Ed Shed and can be revised using the online games. The spellings homework sheet must be returned by the following Friday, also with evidence of the spellings written out in their green book. If the children do not complete and return their homework on time, they will be expected to complete it during Friday breaktime.
PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday and will begin week beginning Monday 8th September 2025. Children must come in PE kit, wearing no jewellery and long hair must be tied back.
The children will go swimming in the Spring and/or Summer term now that they are in Key Stage 2. When swimming does start it is always on a Monday and replaces their Thursday PE lesson. This means they will wear PE kit on Swimming day, Monday, and their one other PE day, Wednesday. Only one class go at a time. The class not swimming will still have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
3W will begin swimming on Monday 26th January 2025. FINAL week Monday 13th April 2025.
3H will begin swimming on Monday 20th April 2025. FINAL week Monday 29th June 2025.
A list of official dates will go out closer to the time.
Kit list: A swimming costume/shorts, a towel, a swimming hat or goggles, if desired, and a hair brush if needed. Please use a suitable swimming or sports bag or back pack. We recommend long hair is tied up. Please do not send any soaps or shampoos.
Prayer bags and Science bags will be given out every Friday. We hope that they are completed and returned by the following Friday so another child can then take them home.
Why we are using KIRFs across our school:
At OLMC, we are committed to helping every child build strong foundations in mathematics. One of the ways we are doing this is by replacing Rapid Recall and introducing KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) as a whole-school strategy.
What are KIRFs?
KIRFs are carefully selected number facts that children are expected to learn and recall instantly. These include facts such as number bonds, times tables, doubles and halves, and place value knowledge. They are designed to support children’s mental maths and fluency.
Why are KIRFs important?
How will it work?
Each half term, children will focus on a specific set of KIRFs appropriate to their year group. These will be practised in school and shared with families to support learning at home. Regular practice helps embed these facts into long-term memory.
How can you help at home?
We’ll provide simple activities and games to make practising KIRFs fun and engaging. Just a few minutes a day can make a big difference!
