Reading
Please ensure your child's bookbag and diary are in school every day, and that you have read with your child and signed their diary. Children are expected to quiz on their book online using AR at school regularly. We appreciate that chapter books take longer to read, so suggest that if they are slowly working through an AR chapter book, that they may take home a shorter book to quiz on.
Spellings
Every Wednesday your child will be allocated a weekly assignment on Spelling Shed. Your child's login can be found on the inside of the front cover of their reading record.
Your child will be sent home a spelling book (the green book). This book offers a place for your child to record the practise they do at home. The spellings set will reflect the spelling patterns being learnt in school that week so any support you can give your child to embed their learning will be very helpful for them.
There will no longer be a weekly spelling test, however it is essential that children engage with the practising the spellings at home and as an extension they can write sentences including the spellings that have been set so that we can check their understanding or write definitions for the words in their spelling books.
Throughout the year,â¯children will be assessed on the spellings that have been taught.
Maths
Times Tables
In your child's reading record you can find their TTRS log in that they can use at both school and home. It is a fun online resource, where children can learn and be quizzed on the times tables. We ask that the children spend 5-10 minutes a day on times tables. We will also be practising times tables in school. At the end of Year 4 there will be a Multiplication Check (MTC). There will be an evening to explain all about this in the future.
Why We Are Using KIRFs Across Our School
At OLMC, we are committed to helping every child build strong foundations in mathematics. One of the ways we are doing this is by replacing Rapid Recall and introducing KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) as a whole-school strategy.
What are KIRFs?
KIRFs are carefully selected number facts that children are expected to learn and recall instantly. These include facts such as number bonds, times tables, doubles and halves, and place value knowledge. They are designed to support children’s mental maths and fluency.
Why are KIRFs important?
How will it work?
Each half term, children will focus on a specific set of KIRFs appropriate to their year group. These will be practised in school and shared with families to support learning at home. Regular practice helps embed these facts into long-term memory.
How can you help at home?
We’ll provide simple activities and games to make practising KIRFs fun and engaging. Just a few minutes a day can make a big difference!
